Qo‘qon lies in the western part of the Fergana Valley in eastern Uzbekistan, on the flat, fertile valley floor fed by mountain rivers and irrigation canals. From above, the town appears as a dense centre with roads radiating outward into a patchwork of fields, orchards and villages. It is one of the valley's main road and rail junctions.
The street pattern tells two stories. Close to the centre, the lanes of the older districts are narrow and irregular. The wider avenues and more regular blocks laid out later cut through and around them. Parks and the palace grounds open up the middle of town, while canals trace thin lines across the surrounding farmland.
From the eighteenth century until the Russian conquest in 1876, Qo‘qon was the capital of the Kokand Khanate. The ornate palace of Khudayar Khan and the Juma Mosque, with its many carved wooden columns, still stand. A Qo‘qon map poster sets this former capital within the wide, cultivated landscape of the Fergana Valley.
The nineteenth-century palace of the last khans stands within its own grounds near the centre. Its open space forms a clear block among the surrounding streets.
Narrow, irregular streets survive in the older quarters and contrast with the straight avenues laid out later around them.
Canals and field boundaries cover the flat land around the town in a fine geometric pattern, typical of the intensively farmed Fergana Valley.
