Andijon is at the eastern end of the Fergana Valley in Uzbekistan, near the border with Kyrgyzstan. The valley floor is flat and densely farmed, and irrigation canals run through and around the city. From above you see a compact centre, main roads spreading out in several directions, and a patchwork of fields and villages surrounding the urban area.
Andijon is one of the oldest cities in the valley and is known as the birthplace of Babur, founder of the Mughal Empire, who described the region in his memoirs. A museum dedicated to him stands in the city. Andijon is also an important agricultural and industrial centre for eastern Uzbekistan, with cotton and fruit grown across the surrounding land.
An Andijon map poster shows canals as thin lines weaving between streets and fields. The older centre forms a denser network of lanes, while Soviet-era and later districts spread outward in larger blocks. Farmland and small settlements around the city fill the edges of the sheet with fine, irregular detail.
Canals cross the city and the surrounding farmland, drawing thin, winding lines that link Andijon to the agricultural landscape of the Fergana Valley.
The historic heart of the city is a tighter network of lanes and courtyards around the market area, standing out as the densest part of the map.
Main roads leave the centre in several directions toward other towns in the valley and the Kyrgyz border, giving the city a star-like outline.
