Marg‘ilon lies in the southern part of the Fergana Valley, a short distance from the city of Fergana. From above, it is a dense low-rise town surrounded by a patchwork of fields, orchards and irrigation channels. The valley floor is flat, so the street pattern spreads out evenly. Older neighbourhoods of courtyard houses show as irregular lanes, while later districts follow straighter Soviet-era lines.
It is one of the oldest towns in Uzbekistan, and in 2007 it officially marked two thousand years of history. For centuries Marg‘ilon has been a centre of silk production, best known for ikat-dyed atlas and adras fabrics that are still woven by hand in local workshops. The silk trade tied the town to the caravan routes that crossed the valley.
