Te mape
Mamanguape stands in the valley of the river that shares its name, inland from the Atlantic coast of Paraíba. From above, the town centre sits close to the river, with streets on the slopes and flatter ground beside it. The Mamanguape runs through farmland and sugar-cane fields on its way to the sea, and roads link the town to the coast and to João Pessoa to the south.
The town has colonial roots and has long been a regional centre for the area. Downstream, the river mouth is protected as an environmental area known for its mangroves and as one of the places in Brazil where the West Indian manatee is studied and protected. That link between the town and its estuary gives the landscape its special character.
A Mamanguape map poster follows the river through the frame. The streets of the centre gather around the valley, while the curving line of water and the lighter pattern of fields around it give the composition its sense of movement. It is a gentle, organic map, shaped by the river more than by any planned grid.
The river winds through the valley past the town, forming the natural spine of the map on its way towards the Atlantic.
The oldest streets gather near the river, with a denser and less regular layout than the newer neighbourhoods further out.
Downstream, the mangrove-lined river mouth is protected as a habitat for manatees and marks the point where the valley meets the coast.
