Meppen is the district town of Emsland in Lower Saxony, near the Dutch border. It grew at the confluence of the Hase and the Ems, and water defines its map: the two rivers meet at the edge of the old town, and the Dortmund-Ems Canal runs alongside, adding a straight artificial line to the natural curves.
