Moramanga lies on the eastern side of Madagascar's central highlands, east of Antananarivo on National Route 2, the main road to the port of Toamasina. From above, the town is organised around this highway and around the railway that passes through it, with a branch line heading north towards Lake Alaotra. Beyond the centre, streets thin out quickly into rice fields, hills and patches of forest.
The town holds an important place in Malagasy history: the uprising of 1947 against French colonial rule began with an attack here, and the date is still commemorated nationally each March. Moramanga is also a gateway to Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, known for its rainforest and for the indri, the largest living lemur.
A Moramanga map poster records a town defined by movement: the long line of the highway, the railway junction and the roads fanning out towards villages, mines and forest. It suits travellers who stopped here on the way to the coast, and families for whom this junction is simply home.
The main highway between the capital and the east coast runs straight through town, the strongest line on the map and the reason for much of its growth.
Rail lines cross the town, with a branch leaving towards Lake Alaotra, adding a second set of long, gentle curves to the composition.
At the margins, the grid dissolves into fields and wooded hills, a reminder of the rainforest landscapes that lie a short distance to the east.
