North Port covers a remarkably large area in southern Sarasota County, most of it laid out from the late 1950s as a planned residential subdivision by the General Development Corporation. On a map it looks like an enormous pattern of looping streets and cul-de-sacs, stretched across flat land and crossed by long, straight drainage waterways that divide it into sections.
Many of those platted lots were sold long before houses were built, so parts of the city are still thinly developed, which shows on the map as streets running through open land. Myakkahatchee Creek winds through the city, and Warm Mineral Springs, a natural spring and site of significant archaeological finds, lies within its boundaries. Interstate 75 crosses the city.
A North Port map poster turns suburban planning into an intricate graphic pattern: thousands of curves and angles, crossed by waterways and bordered by nature preserves. The city also hosts the spring training ballpark of the Atlanta Braves, but its real distinctiveness is the sheer scale and regularity of its street plan, which looks striking at large sizes.
The General Development Corporation layout fills most of the city with curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs, repeated across a very large area.
Long, straight waterways run through the subdivisions, dividing the grid into sections and giving the poster strong, clear linear accents.
This natural spring, known for its warm water and important archaeological discoveries, lies within the city and forms a small, distinctive shape on the map.
