Nsanje is the administrative centre of Malawi's southernmost district, close to the border with Mozambique. In colonial times it was known as Port Herald. The town sits in the lower Shire valley, one of the lowest and flattest parts of the country. On a map its compact grid of streets lies beside the river, surrounded by broad, open floodplain.
Water shapes everything here. The Shire River meanders south toward the Zambezi, dividing into side channels and leaving oxbows and wetland behind. Much of the surrounding land floods in the rainy season, so fields and settlements cluster on slightly higher ground. The printed map shows it clearly: firm street lines on one side and the soft, looping patterns of a large river on the other.
A Nsanje map poster records a riverside town at the edge of a country, in a valley that has long been discussed as a possible waterway link to the Indian Ocean. For people from the district, or those who have worked in the lower Shire, it is a precise and personal image of a landscape set by the river.
The river runs past the town in wide meanders, the defining line of the whole composition. Its curves carry the eye south toward Mozambique and the Zambezi.
Side channels, oxbows and marshy ground surround the settled area. In black and white they form an organic texture unlike any street network.
The town's streets form a modest, regular block pattern on firmer ground. Set against the floodplain, it shows how the settlement holds its place beside the water.
