Ōno is an area in the northern highlands of Iwate Prefecture, in Japan's Tōhoku region. It was once a separate village and merged with neighbouring Taneichi in 2006 to form the town of Hirono. The landscape is rolling upland with forest, pasture and farmland. On a map, roads follow the valleys, and settlement gathers in small clusters along them.
This is a quiet part of Japan, some distance inland from the Pacific coast and away from the main cities. The area is known for dairy and livestock farming and a local woodworking tradition. Its layout is shaped by the terrain and the farming around it rather than by urban growth.
An Ōno map poster brings out the character of this upland countryside. Roads wind through valleys and over low ridges, small streams follow them, and scattered homes and farms mark the land at wide intervals. It is a spacious, thoughtful design that shows a side of Japan rarely seen on city maps.
Roads trace the valleys between low hills, curving with the terrain and connecting the small settlements that make up the area.
Pasture and farmland spread across the higher ground, with field edges and farm tracks forming a loose pattern between patches of forest.
Homes and public buildings gather in a few small centres, leaving broad open spaces on the map between them, typical of rural Tōhoku.
