Tsuruoka is a city in Yamagata Prefecture, spread across the Shonai plain on Japan's northwestern coast. On a map, the old castle town sits at the centre of a wide area of rice fields. The land stretches west to the Sea of Japan and east and south into mountains. The municipality is large, so the city covers coast, plain and uplands.
The centre grew around the castle of the Sakai clan, and the castle site is now Tsuruoka Park, a green space surrounded by moats and old streets. To the southeast rise the Dewa Sanzan, three mountains sacred to the Shugendo tradition. Mount Haguro is the most visited, with its long stone stairway through cedar forest.
A Tsuruoka map poster sets the compact centre and park against a landscape of fields, rivers and hills. The streets around the former castle keep a planned structure, and the roads beyond run straight across the plain between rice paddies. In black and white, the park's outline anchors the town, and the mountains frame it from a distance.
The former castle grounds form a green rectangle at the town's heart, with remnants of the moat still traced around them. The surrounding streets were laid out in relation to the castle.
Flat farmland spreads across the plain around the city, divided by straight roads and irrigation lines. The paddies create a calm, regular texture on the wider map.
The three sacred mountains rise southeast of the town. Mount Haguro, with its famous stone steps and cedar-lined path, has been a pilgrimage site for centuries.
