Yamagata lies in a broad basin in northern Japan, with the Ōu Mountains and the Zaō range rising to the east. The city's plan still carries the logic of a castle town: a grid of streets, a railway line passing right beside the old fortress grounds, and at the heart of it all the rectangular outline of the former castle, still clearly visible from above.
Those grounds are now Kajō Park, where restored gates and wide moats create one of the clearest shapes on the map: a square within a square, surrounded by ordinary city blocks. Beyond the centre the streets loosen into suburbs and farmland, and to the east the roads begin to climb toward Zaō Onsen, the hot-spring village on the mountain slopes.
Yamagata is known for the Hanagasa Festival, when dancers with flower-decorated hats parade through the streets each August, and for the temple of Yamadera, set on a steep hillside within the city limits. A Yamagata map poster draws the city as it is: orderly, contained, and framed by mountains at the edge of the page.
The former Yamagata Castle survives as a park wrapped in broad rectangular moats, a crisp geometric block that anchors the centre of the poster and stands apart from every street around it.
Around the park, streets follow the orderly pattern of an early modern castle town, with straight blocks and narrow lanes that show how the city was planned long before the railway arrived.
To the east, routes leave the basin and wind up toward the Zaō range, where the city gives way to slopes, ski areas and hot springs known for their frost-covered trees in winter.

Aiheā Yamagata
Yamagata suits anyone who has lived in the Tōhoku region, studied at the local university or travelled there for the winter trees of Zaō and the stone steps of Yamadera. The castle moats make it an unusually graphic map for a city of its size.
The poster can carry a title of your choice, a subtitle marking a date or a trip, and a custom coordinates line. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, and download HD files in six print sizes for $9 or order it printed and framed.
