Rietberg lies in the Gütersloh district of North Rhine-Westphalia, on flat land along the upper Ems. On a map the historic core is small and tight, with streets curving around what was once the seat of the counts of Rietberg. Around it the river, streams and ponds weave through meadows, and several outlying villages belong to the town.
The old town is known for its well-preserved half-timbered houses, many with decorated gables, which give the centre a coherent historic look. In 2008 Rietberg hosted the North Rhine-Westphalia state garden show, and the grounds became a large park that is still a prominent green area on the edge of the centre.
