Ripley is a market town in the Amber Valley district of Derbyshire, set on high ground north of Derby. It grew with coal mining and ironworking in the nineteenth century. The Butterley Company, based just outside the town, made the iron roof of London's St Pancras station. The industry has gone, but its imprint on the streets remains.
On a map the town gathers around its market place, where several older roads meet on the crest of the hill. Terraced streets from the mining era run in tight parallel rows off these routes, and later estates fill the slopes with curving closes and cul-de-sacs. The A38 sweeps past on the edge, a broad, smooth line against the finer local grain.
A Ripley map poster captures a very English pattern: a central meeting point, a ring of Victorian terraces and a looser suburban edge, all set among fields and former pit villages. Printed in black and white, the change in density from centre to edge tells the story of how an industrial town took shape on its hill.
Several historic roads meet at the market place on top of the hill. They give the centre a clear star-like shape that anchors the whole map.
Rows of nineteenth-century terraces, built for workers in coal and iron, form tightly packed parallel lines. They print as some of the densest texture on the poster.
Just outside the town lies Butterley, home of the ironworks behind the St Pancras roof and now the base of the Midland Railway heritage line.
