Sakurai lies on the southeastern edge of the Nara Basin, where the flat plain meets the wooded Yamato highlands. The compact centre gathers around its railway stations, and from there the streets open out into rice paddies, villages and old roads along the foot of the hills. The area is linked to some of the earliest political centres of Japan.
The most recognisable shape nearby is Mount Miwa, a symmetrical wooded hill that is itself the sacred object of Omiwa Shrine, which has no main hall to house a deity. The Yamanobe-no-michi, often called Japan's oldest road, runs north along the hillside, and keyhole-shaped burial mounds such as Hashihaka stand out as distinctive outlines among the fields.
A Sakurai map poster works on two scales at once. Up close it shows the small streets and railway lines of a modern town. The wider frame takes in the hill, the old road and the burial mounds of an ancient landscape. To the east, the valley leading to Hase-dera, a temple famous for its peonies, completes the picture.
The forested cone behind Omiwa Shrine is worshipped as the shrine's sacred body, and on the map it forms a calm, rounded open space beside the town.
An ancient path along the eastern hills, regarded as one of Japan's oldest roads, appears as a thin winding line linking shrines, temples and villages.
Burial mounds from the Kofun period, including Hashihaka, keep their unmistakable keyhole outlines among the paddies, one of the rare places where archaeology shows up on a street map.

Aiheā Sakurai
Sakurai appeals to people who have walked the old road, visited Omiwa or Hase-dera, or simply like a map where a town and its ancient landscape share one frame. It suits a hallway or study as a quiet reminder of a journey through Nara.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with the date of a visit, and choose between Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Paper and Sand bring out the softness of the fields, while Noir sharpens the fine lines of the paths.
