Salem lies in the middle of the Willamette Valley, with the Willamette River running along its western side. Downtown is a compact grid of short blocks that meets the river at Riverfront Park. Two road bridges cross to West Salem, which climbs into low hills on the far bank. Outside the centre, the grid loosens into long suburban streets heading toward farmland.
The civic heart is easy to find on a map. The Oregon State Capitol, topped by its gilded pioneer statue, sits on a long mall of lawns lined up with the street grid. Willamette University, founded in the 1840s and one of the oldest universities in the West, borders it to the south. Nearby, Bush's Pasture Park opens a large green gap among the houses.
South of downtown, the river splits around Minto-Brown Island Park, a wide area of sloughs, meadows and trails that stands out as one of the most distinctive shapes on a Salem map poster. Mill Creek and Pringle Creek cut thin diagonal lines through the neighbourhoods. The result is a capital city that looks orderly at its centre and much looser at its edges.

The Willamette braids around a large park of sloughs and open fields south of downtown, a soft, irregular patch that contrasts with the tidy blocks nearby.
Two bridges carry traffic across the river to West Salem, where streets start curving up into hills and the grid gives way to winding residential roads.
