Sallanches lies in Haute-Savoie, where the Arve valley widens before it turns toward Chamonix. The town is known for its view: on clear days the Mont Blanc massif fills the horizon to the southeast. On a map, the valley floor is a rare stretch of level ground among steep slopes, and the town spreads across it between the river, the rail line and the motorway.
In 1840 a large fire destroyed most of the old town. It was rebuilt on a more orderly plan with straight streets and a central square, and this gives Sallanches a noticeably regular core for a mountain town.
