San Benito lies in Cameron County at the southern tip of Texas, between Harlingen and Brownsville in the Rio Grande Valley. Resacas shape its map. These former channels of the Rio Grande now hold water in long, curving loops that wind through town and cut across the street grid, a pattern unlike most Texas towns. San Benito is sometimes called the Resaca City.
Around the resacas, the streets follow a mostly regular grid aligned with the railway and the main highway corridor that links the Valley towns. Neighbourhoods fit around the water, with streets bending or stopping at the banks. Outside town, flat farmland in long rectangular fields extends toward the river and the border with Mexico.
