San Clemente lies in Chile's Central Valley, a short distance east of Talca, at the point where irrigated farmland begins to rise toward the Andes. The town itself is modest in size, with a regular grid of streets around a central square, but the commune it belongs to stretches far to the east, across foothills and river valleys up to the mountain border with Argentina.
The main road through the area continues toward the Pehuenche Pass, one of the crossings between the Maule Region and Argentina, and the commune also includes the high-altitude Laguna del Maule. Closer to town, the landscape is agricultural, organised by canals, field boundaries and rural roads that divide the valley floor into long, regular parcels.
