Guadalquivir estuary
The river widens into a broad mouth along the town's northern edge. It is the clearest shape on the map, a pale band of water between the urban grain and Doñana's unmarked wetlands.

Sanlúcar de Barrameda sits at the mouth of the Guadalquivir, where Andalusia's great river finally opens into the Atlantic. On a map the town sits on the left bank of the estuary. Across the water, the right bank is the empty green of Doñana, one of Europe's best-known wetland reserves. The contrast is striking: dense streets on one side, almost no lines at all on the other.
The town is split into two levels. The Barrio Alto climbs a low ridge, with its castle, palaces and churches. The Barrio Bajo runs down toward the river and the beach at Bajo de Guía. Sanlúcar is the home of manzanilla, a pale dry sherry aged in bodegas that fill whole blocks of the old town. The river's cool, damp air is said to give the wine its character.
The estuary also has a place in maritime history. Columbus sailed from here on his third voyage, and in 1519 the Magellan expedition left Sanlúcar on the journey that became the first circumnavigation. A Sanlúcar de Barrameda map poster shows that departure point: a compact grid pressed against a wide river mouth, with open ocean on one side and protected marshland on the other.
The river widens into a broad mouth along the town's northern edge. It is the clearest shape on the map, a pale band of water between the urban grain and Doñana's unmarked wetlands.
The Barrio Alto's irregular streets gather on higher ground around the castle. Below them, the Barrio Bajo spreads out in straighter blocks toward the waterfront, so the change in terrain shows up in the street pattern.
A long sandy edge follows the river toward the sea. In August, horse races are held on this beach, and the shoreline itself traces a gentle curve on the poster.
