The Abra bay
The broad mouth of the Bilbao estuary lies open in front of the town. Long breakwaters reach into it, and as white space it balances the dense streets on the slope.

Santurtzi sits where the estuary of Bilbao opens into the Abra bay, on its western, left-bank shore. From above, the town reads as two layers. Below are wide, straight docks and container terminals that belong to the Port of Bilbao. Above them, residential streets climb the slope in terraces. The coastline is almost entirely built, with hardly a stretch of natural shore left.
The old fishing harbour is still there, a small, sheltered basin beside the much larger modern port works. Sardines are part of local identity: the traditional song about the sardine sellers walking from Santurce to Bilbao is known across Spain, and grilled sardines are still served near the waterfront. On paper, that small basin becomes a tidy notch in the long, hard line of the quays.
A Santurtzi map poster gives equal weight to water and land. The pale expanse of the Abra fills one side of the sheet. Breakwaters run out into it, thin and ruler-straight. Inland, the street pattern tightens around the old centre and then loosens towards the hills that separate the town from its neighbours along the left bank.
The broad mouth of the Bilbao estuary lies open in front of the town. Long breakwaters reach into it, and as white space it balances the dense streets on the slope.
A compact inner basin survives next to the industrial port, the historic heart of a town long tied to sardine fishing and the walk to Bilbao's markets.
Behind the waterfront, the streets follow the contours of the hillside, so the grid bends and steps upward rather than running in straight lines.

Aiheā Santurtzi
For people from the left bank, Santurtzi is the view of ships entering the estuary and a familiar walk along the harbour. The poster keeps that relationship between town and water, which is how many people picture the place when they are far from it.
Add a family name, a year or the coordinates of a street you lived on, and pick from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the port geometry especially well.
