Shijie is a town within Dongguan, in the heart of the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong province. Its map is shaped by water: the Dongjiang, or East River, and its branches divide the flat delta land into sections, and the town's streets spread across these pieces between embankments and bridges. The result is a layout that is both dense and fragmented.
Much of the built-up area consists of the industrial zones and worker housing typical of Dongguan's manufacturing towns. On the poster these appear as large rectangular blocks and straight roads, with occasional clusters of smaller, older lanes marking former village centres. Around them, remnants of fields, fish ponds and waterways add finer, more organic textures to the edges.
Dongguan grew rapidly from the 1980s into one of the world's major manufacturing centres, and towns such as Shijie were part of that transformation. A Shijie map poster records a place shaped by both river and industry, in a simple black-and-white form that makes its underlying structure easy to see at a glance.
The Dongjiang and its branches cut through the area, creating broad water lines that divide the town into separate sections joined by bridges.
Large rectangular factory compounds and straight access roads cover much of the map, reflecting the town's role in the manufacturing economy of the Pearl River Delta.
Small pockets of tight, irregular lanes mark the older village settlements that existed before industrial growth, a finer texture set among the larger modern blocks.
