Stockton-on-Tees stands on the north bank of the River Tees in north-east England, where the river swings through a series of broad meanders on its way to the sea. Stockton's name is tied to the start of the railway age. In 1825 the Stockton and Darlington Railway opened as the first public railway to use steam locomotives.
