Takanosu is the central town of Kitaakita in northern Akita Prefecture, formed as a city in 2005 when Takanosu merged with neighbouring towns. On the map the settlement sits beside the Yoneshiro River, a wide waterway that curves across the basin and gives the town its main natural line. The streets are compact near the station and thin out quickly into farmland.
Around the town, rice paddies form a patchwork of small rectangles, broken by roads, irrigation channels and the rising ground of the surrounding hills and forests. Takanosu is best known for its giant festival drums, the ōdaiko, which are played in a traditional summer festival and have made the town famous across Japan for their extraordinary size.
A Takanosu map poster shows a place defined by its river and its fields. In black and white, the paddies turn into a fine geometric texture, and the river cuts through them with a single confident curve, a quiet image of rural northern Japan that feels very different from a busy city map.
The broad river curves across the basin beside the town, the strongest natural line on the map, with bridges connecting the banks.
Fields surround the town in a mosaic of small, regular plots, which becomes a striking geometric pattern when printed at poster scale.
Takanosu is known for its enormous ōdaiko drums, played during a traditional festival, a tradition that has given the small town a place in Japanese culture.

Aiheā Takanosu
For anyone with roots in Akita, Takanosu is a reminder of wide fields, a slow river and the sound of the festival drums in summer. A map of the town keeps that landscape close, even far from northern Japan.
