Tarpon Springs lies on the Gulf Coast of Florida, north of Clearwater, where the land breaks into bayous, inlets and small peninsulas. From above, the town is defined by water: the Anclote River runs along its northern side to the Gulf, and Spring Bayou and several smaller bayous cut into the neighbourhoods around the historic centre.
The town is known for its sponge docks along the Anclote, where Greek divers began harvesting sponges from the Gulf in the early twentieth century. Tarpon Springs still has one of the highest shares of Greek Americans of any US city, and each January the Epiphany celebration ends with young men diving for a cross in Spring Bayou.
Away from the water, streets follow a loose grid that bends around the bayous and lakes. A Tarpon Springs map poster keeps that pattern clear, the winding river, the curving shorelines and the compact downtown, all set against the open Gulf.
Along the Anclote River, the working docks and waterfront streets remain the centre of the town's Greek sponge-diving heritage and a focal point of the map.
This curved inlet near downtown is where the annual Epiphany cross dive takes place, and its rounded shape stands out clearly in print.
The river winds west to the Gulf along the northern edge of the town, adding a long, flowing line to the top of the poster.
