Tongatapu is the main island of Tonga and home to the capital, Nukuʻalofa. From above it has an unusual shape: a broad arc of land wrapped around the Fangaʻuta Lagoon, which reaches deep into the island from the north. The land is raised coral limestone, tilted so that the south coast rises in low cliffs while the north slopes gently into reef and shallow water.
Nukuʻalofa spreads along the northern shore, its streets forming the densest grid on the island around the waterfront and the Royal Palace. Beyond the town, the map turns into a patchwork of straight roads between villages and plantations, a regular pattern made possible by the flat ground. Off the north coast, small islets and reefs scatter across a sheltered stretch of sea.
At the eastern end stands the Haʻamonga ʻa Maui, an ancient stone trilithon, while the south coast is known for the Mapuʻa ʻa Vaea blowholes, where swells burst up through the reef. A Tongatapu map poster traces the lagoon, the capital and the long straight roads, a clear picture of an island shaped by coral and sea.
The lagoon cuts into the island from the north, almost splitting it. On the poster it forms a large, calm shape at the centre, bordered by small inlets and mangrove edges.
The capital's streets face the northern reefs, gathered around the harbour and the Royal Palace. It is the tightest grid on the island and the anchor of the composition.
The raised south coast runs as a smooth, firm line, backed by coral terraces. Along it are the blowholes of Mapuʻa ʻa Vaea, where ocean swells are forced up through the rock.
