Tudela lies in the south of Navarre, on the right bank of the Ebro, the river that shapes much of northern Spain. The map shows an old town of narrow, winding streets gathered between the river and a hill where a castle once stood, with a long historic bridge crossing the Ebro to the north.
The city's past is layered: founded in the Moorish period, it later had significant Jewish and Christian communities living side by side. It was the birthplace of the twelfth-century traveller Benjamin of Tudela. The cathedral stands in the old town, and the Plaza de los Fueros forms its central square. To the northeast lies the semi-desert of the Bardenas Reales.
