Tumwater sits at the southern tip of Puget Sound, directly south of Olympia, where the Deschutes River descends in a series of falls before emptying into Capitol Lake and Budd Inlet. On the map the river is the town's oldest line. It winds through a wooded valley, and the historic district and the falls park are gathered at its lower end.
American settlers led by Michael Simmons arrived in 1845 and founded the first American settlement on Puget Sound here, drawn by the waterpower of the falls. The site later became known for the Olympia Brewing Company, whose old brewhouse still stands near the river. Those early mills and industries explain why the oldest streets crowd so closely around the water.
Further south the city opens out. Interstate 5 runs north–south through it, and the long runways of Olympia Regional Airport are the largest straight shapes on the poster, surrounded by business parks and newer residential streets. A Tumwater map poster brings both parts together: the river town of the 1840s and the suburban city that grew beyond it.
Near its mouth the Deschutes drops through a narrow gorge. This short stretch of river, framed by parkland, marks the historic heart of the city.
From the falls the river winds upstream through a green corridor. It draws a curving line through the northern part of the city and connects it to the landscape beyond.
South of the centre, the runways of Olympia Regional Airport form long, clean rectangles. They are the most geometric element on the map and a strong counterweight to the river.

Aiheā Tumwater
Tumwater is easy to overlook next to the state capital, but its map tells a clear story of river, settlement and growth. It suits long-time residents, state workers who live nearby and anyone with a connection to the old brewery.
Personalise the title, add a subtitle such as a move-in date, and keep or rewrite the coordinates line. Choose one of five styles, from Classic black & white and Noir to Paper, Blueprint and Sand, then download the files for $9 or order a matte print, framed if you prefer.
