Universal City lies northeast of San Antonio, directly beside Joint Base San Antonio–Randolph, the former Randolph Air Force Base. The city itself is a mix of suburban streets, commercial corridors and residential subdivisions, but the map is dominated by its neighbour: the base, with its long runways and a historic core laid out in a remarkable circular pattern.
Randolph Field was planned in the late 1920s as a training airfield, and its central area was designed with streets arranged in concentric rings and radiating lines around a central point. The base's headquarters building, with its tall tower, earned the nickname Taj Mahal. Universal City grew alongside the field, closely tied to military families and staff.
A Universal City map poster captures that unusual pairing: ordinary suburban streets on one side, and on the other a geometric plan that looks more like an emblem than a street network. Parallel runways add strong straight lines. In black and white the circles and radials make the design unexpectedly graphic.
The historic core of Randolph Field is built as concentric rings crossed by radiating streets, a rare and striking layout that stands out immediately on the poster.
Long, straight runways on either side of the base core provide the boldest lines in the composition, framing the circular plan between them.
Around the base, Universal City's residential streets follow more familiar suburban curves, a softer pattern that contrasts with the precise military geometry.
