Venaria Reale lies just north of Turin, and its plan still shows that it was built to serve a court. In the seventeenth century the Savoy dukes created a hunting residence here, and the small town was arranged along a straight axis that leads the eye, and the visitor, directly to the palace gates.
The Reggia di Venaria is part of the UNESCO-listed Residences of the Royal House of Savoy, and on a map its footprint is enormous: long wings, courtyards and a geometric garden that dwarfs the historic centre beside it. Beyond it stretches the walled La Mandria park, a large expanse of woodland and meadow that once formed the royal hunting grounds.
