Whitehorse, the capital of Yukon, sits on the west bank of the Yukon River where the valley is wide enough for a town. The downtown grid fills a narrow strip of flat land between the water and a steep escarpment of silt and clay. The airport and the Alaska Highway run along the bench above, and residential areas spread outward in separate pockets.
The city takes its name from rapids whose white water was said to look like the manes of running horses. A hydroelectric dam built upstream in the 1950s created Schwatka Lake and largely submerged those rapids, but the basalt walls of Miles Canyon remain just south of town. The restored sternwheeler SS Klondike on the riverbank recalls the gold rush era, when paddle steamers carried people north to Dawson City.
A Whitehorse map poster shows how strongly the land shapes the town. The river forms a broad curve through the composition, the tidy downtown blocks run parallel to it, and outlying neighbourhoods such as Riverdale across the water sit apart, separated by slopes and forest. Few northern capitals are laid out so plainly by their terrain.
The historic centre is a compact rectangle of streets squeezed between the Yukon River and the escarpment. Its regular blocks stand out sharply against the empty land around them on the map.
South of downtown the river narrows through a basalt canyon and then widens into a reservoir behind the dam. It is one of the most distinctive water shapes on the poster.
The runway sits on a plateau directly above downtown, parallel to the river. Its long straight form, alongside the Alaska Highway, marks the upper edge of the town.

Aiheā Whitehorse
People who have lived, worked or travelled in the Yukon often keep a strong attachment to Whitehorse. A map of its river, canyon and small grid is a quiet reminder of long summer light, winter cold and the scale of the North.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, for example with the year you arrived or a trip along the Alaska Highway. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download 300 DPI files or order a matte print, framed if you like.
