Yokosuka covers much of the Miura Peninsula, where Tokyo Bay narrows before it opens onto the Pacific. From above, the city is split between land and water. Steep wooded hills fill the interior, and the eastern shore breaks into inlets, piers and dry docks. Roads and rail lines squeeze into the valleys and pass through the hills in a series of tunnels.
The harbour has served the navy since the 1860s, when a shipyard was built here with French help. Today it is home to a major US Navy base and to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. The battleship Mikasa is preserved in Mikasa Park, and Commodore Perry came ashore in 1853 at Kurihama on the city's southern shore.
A Yokosuka map poster captures a city defined by its edges. The coastline is intricate and angular, and the hills leave large blank areas between neighbourhoods. The small island of Sarushima sits offshore in the bay. The result is a composition with plenty of open space, far from the even density of Tokyo to the north.
The naval harbour cuts straight-edged basins and piers into the eastern coast. It is the most geometric part of the map and contrasts sharply with the natural shoreline around it.
Wooded ridges cover much of the peninsula, and the streets fill the narrow valleys between them. This gives the city a branching, finger-like pattern instead of a continuous grid.
Sarushima is a small uninhabited island just off the coast that was once fortified. It appears as a single clean outline in the water of Tokyo Bay.

Aiheā Yokosuka
Yokosuka means something particular to many people: sailors and navy families who were stationed here, residents of the peninsula, and people who know its long maritime history. The poster keeps the coastline and the hills together in one frame.
Give the print your own title, a subtitle with a ship name, a date or a unit, and a coordinates line. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, as digital files or as a matte printed poster.
