Zhongzhai lies in the mountainous south of Gansu province, where the land breaks into steep ridges and deep valleys on the way toward Sichuan. Towns in this area can only grow along the valley floors, and on the map that is clear: the streets stretch out in a thin line beside a river and road, closely bordered by the slopes on both sides.
Because of this, the town's shape follows the landscape more than any plan. The main street runs with the valley, short lanes climb a little way up the hillsides, and farmland fills whatever flat or terraced ground is left.
