Abala sits in far northern Ethiopia, in a transitional landscape where the high plateau falls away toward the hot Afar lowlands. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets on a valley floor, surrounded by dry, rugged terrain that is cut by seasonal watercourses. Roads leave in only a few directions, following the easiest passage through the hills.
The settlement grew as a meeting point between highland and lowland communities. Its layout is practical: a main road with buildings along it, short side streets branching off, and open ground beyond. Dry riverbeds that fill briefly in the rains trace pale, braided lines across the nearby land.
The route through Abala links the plateau with the lowland country to the east, and people and goods have long moved along it. An Abala map poster keeps the drawing sparse and honest: a small street pattern, the roads that hold it to the wider region, and the rough ground all around.
The town lies where the Ethiopian highlands step down toward the lowlands. The surrounding terrain is folded and steep, with few easy routes through it.
A single main road carries most of the town's activity. Short side streets branch off it into the residential blocks.
Dry riverbeds run through the landscape and carry water only after rain. They add braided, organic lines to the otherwise spare map.

Ko e hā ʻa Abala
For people from northern Ethiopia, and for travellers who have crossed between the highlands and the lowlands, Abala marks a meaningful threshold. A clean map of it makes that memory easy to hold on to.
