Bahir Dar, the capital of Ethiopia's Amhara region, stands on the southern shore of Lake Tana, the country's largest lake. Just east of the centre, the Blue Nile leaves the lake and begins its long course toward Sudan, so the city's map is defined by two kinds of water: the broad open lake and the narrower river flowing away from it.
The centre is laid out with wide avenues, many of them lined with palms, that run back from the lakeshore toward newer residential districts. Bridges carry roads across the Blue Nile to the eastern side, and the university campus occupies large grounds within the city. Beyond the edges, farmland and wetland stretch along the flat shores of the lake.
Lake Tana is known for its island monasteries, reached by boat from the city, many of them centuries old, and the Blue Nile Falls, known locally as Tis Abay, lie some 30 kilometres downstream. A Bahir Dar map poster frames the lakeshore city at the source of one of the world's great rivers.
The lake fills the top of the map, its southern shore curving around the city with small inlets and wetlands along the edge.
East of the centre the river leaves the lake as a clear channel, crossed by road bridges, marking the start of the Blue Nile.
Broad, straight streets run from the lakeshore into the centre, giving the city a more open and regular plan than many Ethiopian towns of similar size.
