Debre Mark’os sits high on the Ethiopian plateau in the Gojjam region of Amhara, at well over two thousand metres. The town grows across gentle highland slopes, and from above its streets look irregular, with small blocks spreading outward from the centre. Trees and open ground fill the spaces between neighbourhoods, and farmland reaches up to the town edge.
The main road between Addis Ababa and Bahir Dar passes through the town and serves as its central axis. To the south, this road drops into the deep gorge of the Blue Nile before climbing back toward the capital. To the northeast, the Choke Mountains rise above the plateau.
The town's name means Mount of Mark, after the church of Saint Mark at its heart, which has long been an important religious centre. Debre Mark’os is the capital of the East Gojjam Zone and home to a university. A Debre Mark’os map poster shows a highland town grown around its church and main road.
The church that gives the town its name stands at the heart of the older quarter, with streets gathering around its enclosure.
The main road passes straight through the town, linking it south to the Blue Nile gorge and north to Lake Tana.
Fields and scattered homesteads surround the town on the plateau, giving the edges of the map a loose, open texture.
