Abū Ghurayb lies on the western side of Baghdad, on the flat plain of central Iraq. On a map, the urban streets form a compact area, and beyond them the land opens into farmland divided by irrigation canals and field boundaries. The pattern is geometric but loose, shaped by water channels rather than a planned grid.
The area has long been an agricultural district supplying the capital, and main roads connect it eastward toward central Baghdad and westward toward the rest of Anbar and beyond. These highways form the strongest straight lines on the map.
