Ramadi lies on the Euphrates in western Iraq, roughly a hundred kilometres west of Baghdad. It is the capital of Anbar, the country's largest province by area. From above, the river curves along the city's northern side and farmland follows its banks in narrow strips. Beyond the fields the land opens into desert. Main roads run east toward Fallujah and west toward the Syrian and Jordanian borders.
Water shapes the map as much as the streets do. Just outside the city, a canal leaves the Euphrates and runs southeast toward Lake Habbaniyah, a large reservoir that shows as a broad pale shape on any regional view. Inside Ramadi, the residential districts form dense blocks of low buildings. Wide avenues divide them, and open ground and irrigation channels break them up in places.
A Ramadi map poster reduces all of this to its essentials: the bend of the river, the fine grain of neighbourhood streets and the long straight roads that connect the city to the rest of Anbar. Ramadi was heavily damaged during the fighting of the 2000s and 2010s, and much of it has since been rebuilt. That gives the plan a particular meaning for many people who know it.
The river runs along the northern edge of the city. Its bends and islands form the strongest line in the composition, and cultivated land follows the water in thin bands.
A channel leaves the Euphrates near the city and carries water toward Lake Habbaniyah to the southeast. It is a straight, engineered line set against the natural curves of the river.
Iraq's main western highway passes close to Ramadi on its way between Baghdad and the border crossings to Jordan and Syria. On the map it reads as a long, confident line through open terrain.

Ko e hā ʻa Ramadi
For families from Anbar and for people who have lived or served in the region, a plain map of Ramadi can carry more weight than a photograph. It shows the city whole, calm and legible, defined by its river rather than by headlines.
