The Lerma crossing

Acámbaro sits in the far south of Guanajuato, close to the border with Michoacán, where the Lerma River runs across a wide agricultural valley. From above, the town is a tight, mostly orthogonal grid of blocks near the riverbank. The streets loosen into irregular lanes and plots as they reach the fields, and water channels and farm roads cut the surrounding land into long strips.
The town traces its founding to the early sixteenth century, and a colonial stone bridge still crosses the Lerma. For much of the twentieth century Acámbaro was an important railway junction, and the rail corridors are still easy to read on a map as long, straight lines running across the plain. Locally the town is also known for its baking, and its bread is sold well beyond the state.
An Acámbaro map poster turns all of this into a quiet study in lines. The river bends across the sheet, the grid of the centre fills in densely around it, and the rail alignments cut clean diagonals through the open valley. With all colour removed, the composition becomes about proportion: a dense core, thin roads leading out, and a great deal of cultivated space around it.
The Lerma River curves past the town, and the old stone bridge links the two banks. On paper it becomes the strongest natural line in the composition.
Acámbaro's past as a rail junction shows in the long, straight corridors that leave town in several directions. They stand out sharply against the softer pattern of farm roads.
Near the centre the blocks follow a regular grid laid out around plazas and churches. It reads as a dense, even texture in the middle of the poster.

Ko e hā ʻa Acámbaro
For people who grew up in Acámbaro or have family there, a map of the town carries the river, the station and the streets around the plaza. It is a way of keeping home on the wall without relying on a photograph.
You can set your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example a family name or a year, and choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The HD files cost $9, and printed posters on matte paper are also available.
