Agar sits on the Malwa plateau in western Madhya Pradesh, north of Ujjain. Since 2013 it has been the headquarters of Agar Malwa district, created from part of Shajapur district. On the map the town appears as a dense older centre of narrow lanes, surrounded by newer housing and government buildings along the main roads, with open farmland beginning close to the edge of the built area.
The countryside around Agar is typical Malwa: level, fertile black soil used for soybean, wheat and other crops, with water held in tanks and ponds after the monsoon. Where these sit close to settlements, as they often do here, they break up the street pattern and soften its outline. A temple dedicated to Baijnath Mahadev is a well-known pilgrimage site for the area.
