Aghjabadi lies in the lowlands of central Azerbaijan, between the Kura and Araz rivers. The land here is almost perfectly flat. From above, the town is a tight cluster of streets in a vast grid of cultivated plots. Irrigation channels and field boundaries run in long parallel lines, so the countryside looks ruled with a straightedge.
The town is the administrative centre of its district and a market for the cotton and grain grown around it. It is also associated with the composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov, who was born here in 1885 and later wrote the first opera of the Muslim East. A museum in the town honours him.
