Al Ajaylat sits in the north-west of Libya, in the An Nuqat al Khams district, a little way inland from the Mediterranean coast. From above, the town is a compact knot of built-up blocks set on open, level ground. Roads leave it in several directions, and cultivated plots and scattered buildings thin out gradually toward the edges. There are no hills or rivers to crowd the plan, so the streets spread across the plain with little in their way.
On a map, the contrast between the dense centre and the looser surroundings gives the town its character. Close to the middle, streets are short and tightly packed. Further out, longer roads run between fields and farm compounds, and the lines grow straighter and further apart. With a population of roughly 130,000, Al Ajaylat is larger than its modest footprint on a regional map might suggest, and its outskirts reach well into the farmland.
The town lies between Tripoli to the east and the Tunisian border to the west, and the coastal city of Sabratha, known for its Roman ruins, is a short distance to the north-east. An Al Ajaylat map poster shows the town in its setting: the settled core, the roads that link it to the coast and the neighbouring towns, and the plain around it, all reduced to clean black lines on a pale ground.
Al Ajaylat stands on the Jifara plain, a wide coastal lowland. With no relief to bend the streets, the plan spreads evenly outward and reads clearly at any print size.
Short, closely spaced streets in the centre give way to longer, straighter roads and wider gaps between buildings, a gradual change in density that shows up well in black and white.
Routes run north toward the Mediterranean shore and east and west toward neighbouring towns, tying Al Ajaylat into the corridor between Tripoli and the Tunisian border.
