Zawiya lies on Libya's Mediterranean coast, about 45 kilometres west of Tripoli. The coastline forms its northern edge, and the main coastal highway runs through it from east to west. The city extends along that line more than it spreads inland, following a pattern common along the North African coast.
From above, the centre is a dense area of streets near the coastal road. Around it, residential areas spread out in a looser pattern, broken up by gardens and orchards. On the coast, the oil refinery and its terminal form a large industrial area with piers reaching out into the sea.
Zawiya is one of the main cities of western Libya and has long been an important refining centre. A Zawiya map poster shows a coastal city in a simple frame. The sea runs along the top, the highway along the middle, and farmland gradually replaces the streets to the south.
The coastline runs along the northern edge of the city. On the poster it gives the whole composition a long, clean horizontal line.
The main road from Tripoli to the Tunisian border passes through the city. It is the axis along which Zawiya has developed.
A large industrial complex sits on the coast, with piers reaching into the sea. It is one of the most distinctive shapes on the map.
