Alabel is the capital of Sarangani province in southern Mindanao, close to the shores of Sarangani Bay and near General Santos City. From above, the town centre is a modest cluster of streets along the main highway, with barangays spread out across the farmland and hills of the municipality. The coast and the bay lie close by and shape the wider setting.
As the provincial seat, Alabel holds the government offices of Sarangani, and these form a civic district along the main road. Much of the land around the town is agricultural, and the roads that run into the interior follow the rise and fall of the ground.
