General Santos sits at the head of Sarangani Bay on the southern coast of Mindanao. From above, the city meets the water along a broad shoreline, and its streets spread inland across a fairly flat plain that rises gradually toward Mount Matutum, a volcano visible from much of the city.
Named after General Paulino Santos, who led the settlement of the area in the 1930s, the city is known as the tuna capital of the Philippines. Its fish port complex handles large volumes of tuna, and the port area appears on the map as a distinct cluster of piers and docks along the bay.
A General Santos map poster balances water and land. The curved coastline of Sarangani Bay forms a strong edge along the bottom of the composition, while the grid of the city extends north, crossed by a few main roads that lead toward the interior.

Piers and docks of the tuna fishing port project into the water, forming a distinctive cluster of shapes along the shoreline.
Streets spread north across a gentle plain, with main roads leading inland toward the slopes of Mount Matutum.
