Alanya's map is organised around a single dramatic feature: a steep rocky headland pushing south into the Mediterranean, crowned by castle walls. On either side, the coast opens into long, gently curving bays lined with hotels and apartments, while the Taurus Mountains rise close behind, confining the city to a narrow strip along the shore.
The castle dates largely from the thirteenth century, when the Seljuk sultan Alaeddin Keykubad made the town a winter seat and a naval base. By the harbour stands the octagonal Red Tower, and nearby are the remains of a Seljuk shipyard cut into the rock at the water's edge.
An Alanya map poster shows the old town's twisting lanes climbing the headland, the harbour tucked into its eastern side, and the regular streets of the newer districts following the two beaches. Along the western shore lies Cleopatra Beach, and at the foot of the peninsula is the Damlataş cave, long visited for its humid air.

Two long bays
Beaches stretch east and west of the headland in smooth arcs, with coastal roads running parallel to the sand and neat blocks filling the land behind.
Mountains behind
The Taurus foothills press close to the coast, so the city's streets thin out quickly inland, leaving a long, narrow band of development along the sea.
