The centre of Nicosia is one of the most distinctive city shapes in Europe. The Venetian walls from the sixteenth century form an almost perfect circle with eleven pointed bastions, so from above the old town looks like a star. Inside, the streets are narrow, twisting and irregular.
Right through that star runs the Green Line, the buffer zone that has divided the city since 1974. On the map it appears as a strip of empty ground, closed streets and dead ends. Nicosia is often described as the last divided capital in Europe, and crossing points such as Ledra Street connect the two sides.
Outside the walls, the modern city spreads out across the Mesaoria plain, crossed by the usually dry bed of the Pedieos river. A Nicosia map poster shows the bastions, the dividing line and the newer districts that grew around them.

Green Line
The buffer zone runs through the old city and beyond. It shows on the map as a band where streets stop at barriers on both sides.

The main pedestrian street runs north to south through the walled town and leads to one of the crossing points between the two parts of the city.
