Allauch sits on the hills northeast of Marseille, at the edge of the limestone massifs that surround the city. The map shows a small old village climbing a slope below a rocky ridge. Narrow lanes wind up the hillside, and villas and hamlets spread out along roads that follow the valleys and wooded slopes.
The windmills on the ridge above the old village are the town's best-known landmark and can be seen from far across the Marseille basin.
