Almoradí is a town in the Vega Baja del Segura, the fertile lowland of southern Alicante province in Spain. The Segura river flows nearby, and the land around the town is a patchwork of irrigated farmland, or huerta, crossed by canals and ditches that go back centuries.
The town's layout is unusually regular for an old Spanish settlement. The 1829 Torrevieja earthquake destroyed much of Almoradí, and it was rebuilt to a planned grid of straight streets and rectangular blocks around a central square. That order is immediately visible on a map.
An Almoradí map poster sets that tidy grid against the irregular farmland around it, with its irrigation channels and field boundaries. It is a clear example of how history can be read in a street plan.
After the 1829 earthquake the town was rebuilt on a regular plan, and its straight streets and even blocks form a distinctive grid on the map.
Surrounding fields are divided by irrigation channels and small roads, creating a fine, irregular pattern that frames the town.
The river and its main canals cross the lowland near the town and add long, gently curving lines to the flat landscape.

Almoradí's plan tells its own story, and a map makes that story easy to see. It suits people from the Vega Baja as well as those who have settled on the Costa Blanca and know the town from market days.
