Altônia lies in the far north-west of Paraná, in an area opened to settlement in the mid-twentieth century. Like many towns from that period, it was laid out on purpose, and the map shows it clearly. Straight streets cross at right angles to form a tidy grid of blocks, with a central square acting as the reference point for everything else.
Beyond the grid, the land opens into wide farmland on a gently rolling plateau. Rural roads run between large fields, and streams cut shallow valleys lined with narrow bands of trees. On the map, these waterways add the only curves to an otherwise very geometric scene.
The town is not far from the Paraná River, which forms the state's border in this region, and much of local life depends on agriculture.
