Ames is a college town laid out on the open prairie of central Iowa. Its streets follow a steady rectangular grid, but two green corridors break it up: Squaw Creek and the South Skunk River, which meet on the southeast side of town. Their wooded valleys and parks draw soft, winding lines through an otherwise orderly street plan.
The city is home to Iowa State University, whose campus occupies a large portion of the map. Its central lawn is one of the best-known college quads in the Midwest, with the Campanile standing near the middle. South of the campus are Jack Trice Stadium and Hilton Coliseum, whose large oval footprints are easy to spot from above.
